Astral Festival between beautiful boreal wilderness and a double rainbow

Taking place in the beautiful boreal wilderness of Northern Alberta, Friday the 13th kicked off with performances from local favorites BUBBLE GUMP and Nada Deva who played to a packed main stage, setting the tone for the rest of the weekend. At Wakah Chan, famed Bristol producer Sam Binga switched up the vibe by offering some ground-rattling reggae, dub and bass. The headliners of the night were Dirtybird favorites Walker & Royce, who brought a walloping house set to the main stage.

Saturday afternoon saw The Manor’s III Behavior Jam Sessions party which featured local favorites spinning a high-energy back-to-back set while the full service M-Bar gushed with delicious craft beer and cocktails. As if the music, beverages and ethereal surroundings weren’t enough, patrons were wowed by a double rainbow that made an appearance.

As sunshine turned into moonlight and rainbows turned into lasers, Wadjit played a mesmerizing drum ‘n’ bass set on Wakah Chan along with Canadian festival favorites Small Town DJs, who kept the dance floor bouncing. At the main stage, RROTIK brought one of the best sets of the night as Saturday melted into Sunday.

On Sunday, the warmest day of the weekend, patrons donned their shiniest spandex, most colorful leg warmers and tightest sweatbands for an ‘80s themed aerobics class/party led by Cheryl from Vancouver. According to several attendees, it was one of the highlights of the weekend. The movement didn’t end there, however, as the night saw a live set from FRASE and his partner EMBODYMOVEMENT (Emily Honegger) who danced alongside him creating a multilayered performance.

Presenting both comedy and beatboxing

Other noteworthy sets include MOONTRICK's live performance which mostly featured new and unreleased music and also saw on-stage cameos from Everyman and FRASE. Moontrick was followed by Skiitour and then Bijou, a jam-packed trio of musicians who kept the energy high. Keeping the vibe diverse was BASKET LIVE who brought the laughs with his unexpected (and unplanned) comedy acts between sets which led into some mind-melting beatboxing by SCRIBBLY DOODLE.

Beyond the music, Astral Harvest  brought a memorable arts lineup as well. Guests who attended had the chance to witness painting, hooping, aerial performances, flow arts, face and body painting, burlesque, and much more from an array of talented artists. Those who seeked a sound mind and active body were able to take part and/or witness acro and buti yoga, meditation sessions, juggling, Thai massages, permaculture, poi classes, tea party playshops, self improv-ment, poetry, beatboxing, palm reading, sound mediation, beekeeping, singing and drumming circles, the art of magic, Pot 101 and more.

a miracle of epic proportions

The final and most breathtaking performance was made not by musicians but rather by Mother Nature herself as the Aurora Borealis made a guest appearance in the sky, adding some magic to the festival’s Illumination theme. Experiencing a double rainbow and northern lights in the same weekend was a festival miracle of epic proportions.
